All mediums are burdened with countless previous deeds.

Three QR codes hang on the wall as kaleidoscopic letters flash and dazzle on the advertising screen. As if I was leaving behind some secret code or clue, I hung symbols on the spot where paintings would usually be. The barcodes force visitors to access the exhibition’s contents in isolation, each visitor confined to the screen of his or her smartphone. The QR codes — each representing the realms p1, p2, and #0 — are linked to photos and videos.

 

As an artist who has been practicing painting, I have always wanted to rid my objects of materiality, and more importantly, rid painting of its materiality. To me, the act of discarding the physical medium from a painterly practice is parallel to the man who would willfully choose death so that he could dispose of the human body — or, life’s defilements itself.

 

Various images of the human existence were a feature of my previous paintings, but as time progressed, these forms of the visible universe dispersed and disappeared, remaining on my canvases only as colors or light. Visitors were often intrigued by the fact that most of the images remaining on these canvases were portraits.

I took my eyes beyond the corporeal form, gazed attentively into the depths of the existence, and transferred what I saw onto my canvas.

 

In EVERYTHING DEPENDS ON THE MIND, the existence resides in the realm of nirvana in its unadulterated, true nature, leaving behind it only a clue. The digital body, knowing that the makeshift, material body would be unable to reproduce the true body of light it is, did not want to be manifested in the corporeal world. So instead,

I allowed it to remain exactly as it was born, as its true nature and devised each recipient to engage the true nature of the being within one’s own “personal nirvana” — a system that resembles the structure of human existence.

I took the testimony below and made it flash in brilliant colors on the advertising screen of “defilements.”

The existence of all objects is caused by you. 

 

You have come to find me, but I might no longer be.

You have come in yearning, but all there’s left might be a shadow.

All that remains is a small clue that shows the way to the realm of nirvana,

And engaging it requires the most secretive and intimate one-on-one meeting.

Don’t think that you are unable to meet me.

You and I will be meeting one-on-one, our faces coming very close to each other.

Seeing something directly is not the only way to engage its being.

This small realm of nirvana allows the sharpest view of true nature.

Come close and face me.

My light will shine on your eyes uninterruptedly.

To I who is without a body, this is my true nature.

모든 매개에는 선업이 쌓여있다.

전시장의 벽에는 총 세 개의 QR코드 이미지가 걸려있고, 중앙에 놓인 광고용 스크린에는 텍스트가 현란하게 노출된다.  나는 마치 암호 혹은 어떤 단서를 남기듯 기호를 회화의 자리에 걸었다. 이것을 매개로 관람자가 (각자의 휴대폰을 들여다보는) 격리된 스크린영역에서 접하도록 했다. QR코드는 각각 P1, P2, #0의 영역으로, 사진과 영상이 게시된 링크로 연결된다.

 

나는 회화를 다루어 오면서 대상의 물성 뿐 아니라 회화의 물성 또한 벗어던지고 싶다는 생각을 해왔다. 회화가 물질매개를 버리는 것은 인간이 스스로 죽음을 택함으로서 육체라는 생의 번뇌를 벗어던지는 것과 같은 맥락이다.

 

그간 나의 회화에서 보이던 인간의 존재양태는 시간이 갈수록 가시세계의 형상이 흩어지고 사라지면서 화면에는 빛이나 색으로 남겨 두었다. 이 화면들이 대부분 인간의 초상화라는 지점은 관람자로부터 흥미롭게 여겨졌다. 나는 외형의 너머에 있는 존재의 심연을 깊이 들여다보고 그것을 화면에 담아왔다.

 

본 전시<EVERYTHING DEPENDS ON THE MIND>에서는 존재가 단서만을 남긴 채 피안의 세계에서 본질 그대로 남고자 했다. 디지털육신은 본연의 빛대로 완전히 재현되지 않을 어색한 몸을 입고 물질의 세계로 도치되기를 원치 않았다. 태어남의 본질 그대로 남아 각각의 수용자가 ‘개인의 피안’에서 그것의 본질을 접하도록 했다. 이것은 인간의 존재 구조와 닮아있다.

 

아래의 진술은 전시장 가운데에 놓인 ‘번뇌'의 광고 전광판을 현란하게 오가도록 했다.

모든 것은 너로 인해 존재한다 

 

나를 찾으러 왔지만 내가 없을수도 있다.

무언갈 바라고 왔지만 흔적만이 남았을 수 있다.

피안의 세계로 가는 작은 단서만이 남아

그것을 접하는 것은 아주 내밀하고 사적인 일대일의 만남이다.

나를 못만난다 생각하지 말라.

아주 가까이 너와 내가 일대일로 얼굴을 마주하게 된다.

직접 보는 것만이 실체를 마주한다 생각치 말라.

이 작은 피안의 세계에서야 말로 본질에 가까운 선명함을 제대로 보는 방법이다.

가까이 나를 마주보라.

나의 빛이 그대로 너의 눈을 비출것이다.

육체가 없는 나는 이것이 본질이다.
